Elden Ring: All Larval Tear Locations — How To Respec Your Build

How To Respec In Elden Ring

If you’ve dumped dozens of hours into Elden Ring only to realise your build is a complete mess, don’t panic — I’ve been there. Early on, I put way too many points into Arcane, chasing a bleed build, and by the time I reached Leyndell, I was genuinely struggling. That’s exactly what Larval Tears are for. They let you completely reset your attribute points and try an entirely different build without starting a new game. The catch is they’re limited, scattered across the map, and easy to miss. This guide covers every location I’ve found across both the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

How To Unlock Respec

Before you can respec your character, two requirements must be met:

  • Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon
  • Obtain at least one Larval Tear

After defeating Rennala in the Raya Lucaria Academy, she remains inside the Grand Library and unlocks the Rebirth option. This allows you to reallocate all of your attribute points whenever you want, provided you have a Larval Tear to spend.

What Is A Larval Tear

A Larval Tear is a special consumable item used exclusively for respeccing your character. Every time you choose Rebirth through Rennala, one Larval Tear is consumed.

Unlike most resources in the game, Larval Tears are limited per playthrough and cannot be farmed infinitely. Because of that, it’s worth thinking carefully before constantly changing builds.

Important Respect Rules

When respeccing, there are a few restrictions:

  • Your overall level stays the same
  • You must redistribute every available attribute point
  • Stats cannot go lower than your starting class values
  • One Larval Tear is required for every respec

This means you can completely rebuild your character, but you can’t lower base stats below what your class originally started with.

Best Early Larval Tear Location

Village Of The Albinaurics

If you’re looking for an easy Larval Tear early in the game, head to the Village of the Albinaurics in southern Liurnia.

After entering the village, you’ll find a graveyard area filled with enemies and stone coffins. A Larval Tear can be looted directly from a corpse here, making it one of the easiest Tears to obtain without fighting a difficult enemy.

Larval Tears Dropped By Disguised Enemies

One of Elden Ring’s strangest secrets is that several Larval Tears come from enemies hiding in plain sight. Many harmless-looking creatures transform into powerful monsters when attacked.

Limgrave

Near the Agheel Lake South Site of Grace, a lone Wandering Noble transforms into a giant Runebear when defeated and drops a Larval Tear.

Liurnia Of The Lakes

A Giant Crayfish near the Folly on the Lake Site of Grace transforms into a Grafted Scion and rewards a Larval Tear when defeated.

Caelid

In southern Caelid, a Wandering Noble near the graveyard transforms into a Troll. Defeat the enemy to receive a Larval Tear.

Altus Plateau

Near the Minor Erdtree in Altus Plateau, a disguised enemy transforms into a Lion Guardian. Defeating it rewards yet another Larval Tear.

Larval Tears Sold By Merchants

Not every Larval Tear requires combat.

Nomadic Merchant in the Siofra River

A second purchasable Larval Tear can be found from the Nomadic Merchant in Siofra River, costing 3,000 Runes.

Pidia, Carian Servant

After progressing through Caria Manor, you’ll eventually gain access to Pidia. He sells a Larval Tear for 3,000 Runes.

Nokron, Eternal City Larval Tears

Nokron is one of the best locations in the game for gathering Larval Tears.

The Mimic Tear boss rewards multiple Tears, and several more can be discovered throughout the city during exploration. If you’re planning on trying multiple builds, Nokron is well worth revisiting.

Shadow Of The Erdtree Larval Tear Locations

The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion introduces additional Larval Tears within the Shadow Realm.

Many of these appear near glowing gravestones and can only be found at night, making them easy to miss if you’re exploring during the day.

These extra Tears provide more opportunities to experiment with different builds during the DLC’s late-game content.

Eldertree

Gravesite Plain

We found the first Tear east of the ‘Gravesite Plain’ Site of Grace.

Gravesite

Cliffroad Terminus

The second can be found southeast of the ‘Cliffroad Terminus’ Site of Grace.

Greatbridge, North

The third can be found just East of the ‘Greatbridge, North’ Site of Grace.

Can You Get Infinite Larval Tears

No.

Larval Tears are limited during a single playthrough and cannot be farmed infinitely. Once you’ve collected all available Tears, you’ll need to begin New Game Plus to obtain another set.

Because of this limitation, it’s worth thinking carefully before repeatedly changing your build.

Should You Respec In Elden Ring

Absolutely.

One of Elden Ring’s greatest strengths is the freedom it gives players to experiment with different weapons, spells, and playstyles. The Rebirth system exists specifically to support that flexibility.

Whether you’re switching from a Strength build to Intelligence, testing a Faith setup, or simply correcting early-game mistakes, Larval Tears allow you to adapt your character without losing progress.

As long as you don’t waste every Tear immediately, you’ll have more than enough opportunities to refine your build throughout your adventure in the Lands Between.
